Harrow seeks nominations for community heroes

Harrow residents, workers and community groups can now put forward nominations for this year’s Harrow’s Heroes awards, which recognise people who make a practical difference across the borough.

The awards are open to anyone who lives or works in Harrow, as well as people and teams whose work supports Harrow residents. Harrow Council says nominations can cover both long-running community service and smaller acts of help that improve local life.

Who can be nominated in Harrow

Nominations can be made for local volunteers, neighbours, community organisers, workplace teams and others who help make Harrow a better place to live or work.

Eligible nominees include:

  • People who live in Harrow
  • People who work in the borough
  • Teams or groups serving Harrow residents
  • Neighbours, friends or community members who regularly help others
  • Volunteers whose work supports local wellbeing, inclusion or civic life

Harrow’s Heroes is intended to highlight the everyday work often carried out quietly in neighbourhoods, community centres, faith groups, local projects and workplaces.

How to nominate a local hero

Residents are being asked to submit a nomination through Harrow Council’s Harrow’s Heroes process. The council is encouraging nominators to describe what the person or team has done, who has benefited, and why their contribution deserves public recognition.

The strongest nominations usually give clear examples: practical help offered, time given, people supported, or a project that has improved life for others in the borough.

The announcement follows similar recognition schemes elsewhere in London, including community service awards in Barnet, where long-term local contributions were honoured publicly.

Awards will be celebrated later this year

Cllr Janet Mote, Harrow Council’s Cabinet member for Community and Culture, said everyone knows someone locally who makes a difference and urged residents to put their names forward.

“Every year I am moved and inspired by the nominations received,” she said. “Harrow’s Heroes celebrates the best of Harrow and is our way of saying thank you to those making a real difference.”

Harrow Council has asked residents to nominate their local hero now, with the awards due to be celebrated later in the year.
