Free Shropshire King’s Award workshops this September

Volunteer-led groups in Shropshire can get practical help with King’s Award for Voluntary Service nominations at three free briefing workshops in September.

The sessions are being held by the Shropshire Lieutenancy for organisations interested in nominating a local volunteer group for the award. They are aimed at volunteer-led organisations with three or more volunteers, including groups that are not registered charities.

The workshops run in Ludlow, Telford and online between Wednesday 9 September and Tuesday 29 September 2026. Places are free, and booking is by emailing Shelley Davies at [email protected].

The in-person briefings in Ludlow and Telford are recommended for groups that want a more detailed look at eligibility. According to the Shropshire Lieutenancy, these sessions give members of the Shropshire KAVS panel the opportunity to consider an individual group’s position in more depth.

An evening Zoom session has also been added for those who cannot attend the daytime workshops in person.

Volunteer groups do not need charity status

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service celebrates the work of volunteer groups across the UK. The source notice says nominated groups do not have to be registered charities, but they must be volunteer-led and have three or more volunteers.

For Shropshire organisations, that makes the workshops relevant to a broad range of local groups, including community associations, small volunteer teams and local projects that may not sit within a formal charity structure.

The award is described by the Lieutenancy as the equivalent of an MBE and the highest award given to local voluntary groups in the UK. It gives Royal recognition to work carried out by volunteers and can help raise a group’s profile.

The Lord-Lieutenant has said she would like to support more organisations across Shropshire to win the award, after seeing local voluntary groups receive the King’s Award for Voluntary Service in previous rounds.

What the briefing sessions will cover

The sessions will explain the King’s Award for Voluntary Service and the nomination process. The practical focus is on helping people understand whether a local group may be eligible and what is involved in putting a nomination forward.

The most detailed support is expected at the Ludlow and Telford workshops, where the Shropshire KAVS panel can look more closely at individual group eligibility. The online evening session offers a shorter virtual option for people who need a later time slot.

The practical picture:

  • Three free briefing sessions are scheduled in September 2026.
  • The workshops are for people interested in nominating volunteer-led groups.
  • Groups need at least three volunteers but do not have to be registered charities.
  • In-person attendance is recommended where eligibility needs closer review.
  • Booking and further information are available by email from Shelley Davies at [email protected].

How to book a place

Anyone wanting to attend one of the Shropshire Lieutenancy briefings should email Shelley Davies at [email protected].

The booking email should state which session the attendee wants to join: Ludlow on Wednesday 9 September, Telford on Monday 14 September, or the Zoom workshop on Tuesday 29 September.
