The event brings together services from across the City Council with specialist organisations that work with carers and people receiving care. Age UK, Healthwatch and the NHS are among the organisations due to attend, alongside representatives from Citizens Advice and Alzheimer’s Society.

Those organisations are part of the council’s dedicated Carers Support Service, which was launched last year and combines face-to-face, phone and online help for unpaid carers of all ages.

Munisha has also covered other Carers Week support activity, including free carers events in Cheshire East and Carers Week activities in Shropshire.

Benefits, emergency planning and housing advice

The council says carers can use the Milton Keynes event to ask questions about money and benefits, emergency planning, housing options and other forms of support.

There will also be opportunities to meet other carers in similar situations. That peer contact may matter for residents whose caring role is regular but not always visible in public life, including people supporting family members with illness, disability, mental health problems or addiction.

Milton Keynes City Council estimates there could be 21,000 unpaid carers in MK, including many young carers who look after relatives who could not cope without their help.

Councillor Donna Fuller, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health, Community and Housing, said the event was aimed at people caring for someone who lives in Milton Keynes.

“If you’re caring for someone who lives in Milton Keynes, this event is a great opportunity to get the support you deserve,” she said. “We know caring can be challenging, so it’s important everyone feels connected, informed and supported.”

Parking and refreshments for attendees

The source notice says limited free parking will be available outside Simpson Day Centre on Simpson Road, with several other carparks within a few minutes’ walk.

Light refreshments will be available throughout the event for guests.

The council also says it provides a minimum direct payment of £240 for unpaid carers, alongside additional assistance that varies by individual circumstances. Further local support information is available through Milton Keynes City Council’s carers information page.
