Activities across Shropshire during Carers Week
Shropshire Council’s Carers Support Team has arranged a week of events and competitions to recognise the role of unpaid and family carers in the county. The council says the activities are intended to give carers a break from caring responsibilities, a chance to enjoy the Shropshire countryside, and time to connect with other carers.
The full programme is not set out in the source notice, and individual venue addresses and activity times have not been provided there. Readers planning to attend should contact the carers support team directly before travelling or making arrangements.
This year’s Carers Week theme focuses on building carer-friendly communities. In practical terms, the campaign is also being used to reach people who may be supporting a relative, partner, friend or neighbour without realising that they fall within the definition of a carer.
Who the programme is trying to reach
A carer is described in the council notice as someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, substance misuse issue, or needs extra help as they grow older.
That support can look very different from household to household. For some people it may mean picking up prescriptions, preparing meals or offering emotional support. For others, it may involve personal care during the day and night.
The council’s notice also points to the way caring responsibilities can begin suddenly, such as after an accident or a child being born with a disability. In other families, the role builds slowly as a parent’s independence changes or a partner’s health worsens.
Margarete Davies, carer lead and manager of Shropshire Carers, said caring can be rewarding but may also become tiring, lonely and isolating. She said the team wants carers to take some time out and take part in the activities.
