Vilnius has officially secured the hosting rights for Routes Europe 2028, marking the first time the Lithuanian capital will serve as the stage for the continent’s most influential aviation networking event. The announcement, made by Lithuanian Airports (LTOU), positions the city as a central hub for future flight route negotiations, potentially transforming the region’s connectivity with the rest of the world.
Routes Europe is widely regarded as the premier annual gathering for the aviation industry, attracting over 1,200 delegates, including representatives from 120 airlines, 220 airports, and more than 60 tourism organizations. The three-day event serves as a marketplace where airline decision-makers and airport operators negotiate new flight paths, increased frequencies, and strategic partnerships.
Strategic Growth and Economic Potential
The selection of Vilnius reflects a growing recognition of the Baltic aviation market’s potential. For Lithuania, hosting the summit is not merely a matter of prestige but a strategic opportunity to directly influence the country’s accessibility. During the event, the host nation receives exclusive access to additional meetings with key decision-makers from global carriers, providing a unique platform to pitch new direct routes.

Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications, Juras Taminskas, likened the event’s significance to a major cultural milestone. “In May, Europe traditionally lives in the spirit of Eurovision; we can be proud that in 2028, Vilnius will become a kind of Eurovision stage for aviation,” Taminskas stated. He emphasized that the summit is an exceptional opportunity to showcase the country’s potential and attract new air carriers to expand the local flight network.
Beyond the aviation sector, the economic ripple effects are expected to be substantial. Edvinas Grikšas, Minister of Economy and Innovation, noted that international events of this scale attract thousands of high-spending business visitors, boosting the local hospitality sector and providing a showcase for Lithuania’s broader business environment and cultural heritage.

A Milestone for Baltic Aviation Infrastructure
The timing of the 2028 summit is particularly significant for Vilnius. It follows the successful opening of a new departure terminal at Vilnius Airport and comes on the heels of what are projected to be record-breaking passenger numbers in 2025. The city’s modernizing infrastructure was a key factor in winning the bid against other European contenders.
Steven Small, Vice President of Events at Aviation Week and Informa, the organizers of Routes Europe, highlighted that Vilnius stands out due to its vibrant economy and thriving tourism sector. “Routes Europe is one of the most important events for route development planners in Europe, shaping the future of air connectivity across the region and beyond,” Small noted, adding that the 2028 event will allow experts to see the unique advantages of the Lithuanian market firsthand.

Long-term Benefits for Travelers and Tourism
For the average traveler, the implications of hosting Routes Europe are practical and long-term. The negotiations held during these three days often result in the announcement of new low-cost and legacy carrier routes in the following seasons. By bringing the world’s airline planners to the city, Vilnius aims to secure more direct connections to major European hubs and underserved markets in Asia and the Middle East.
Simonas Bartkus, CEO of Lithuanian Airports, expressed confidence that the event would act as a catalyst for airline expansion. “Decision-makers will have a great opportunity to see the largest and most promising market in the Baltic States, our latest infrastructure, and the tourist appeal of Vilnius,” Bartkus said.
Vilnius will be the 21st city to host the conference, joining the ranks of previous hosts such as Seville, Aarhus, and Bergen. The 2028 event will be held at the Litexpo exhibition and congress center, featuring a program that includes technical tours and cultural showcases designed to leave a lasting impression on the international aviation community.
