Bramall Hall has secured £1 million in new government funding to support upgrades at one of Stockport’s best-known historic buildings.
The Grade I listed hall, described by Stockport Council as one of the country’s best-preserved timber-framed manor houses, will use the money for work intended to protect the building and improve access for residents, families, school groups and visitors interested in Stockport’s civic landmarks.
The award comes through the Museum Estate and Development Fund, known as MEND, under the wider Arts Everywhere Fund. The programme supports repairs and improvements at museums, libraries, cultural venues and heritage buildings across England.
£1 million for a Grade I listed landmark
The new funding is aimed at long-term protection of Bramall Hall’s historic fabric while keeping the site open as a place for learning and visits.
For Stockport, the award adds national backing to a building that already plays a visible role in the borough’s heritage offer. Grade I listing is reserved for buildings of exceptional interest, placing Bramall Hall among the most protected historic sites in England.
The £1 million boost is separate from the £1.6 million awarded to Bramall Hall in 2024 to help address long-running roof issues. Together, the two funding streams point to a broader Bramall Hall upgrade programme rather than a single repair job.
Munisha has also covered other UK heritage investment, including funding for historic Temple Works in Leeds, where public money is being used to protect major civic landmarks while supporting wider regeneration.
Access for visitors and school groups
Stockport Council said the investment will help residents, schools and visitors from beyond the borough continue exploring the hall’s history.
That access point matters because buildings such as Bramall Hall are not only preserved as architectural objects. They are used for school visits, local history learning, family days out and cultural programming that depends on the building remaining safe, usable and well maintained.

Cllr Dan Oliver, the cabinet member responsible for culture, said Bramall Hall is “one of Stockport’s most important and much-loved historic landmarks” and called the funding “a big boost” for protecting and enhancing it for future generations.
He said the work would support upgrades to a nationally significant building while improving access for visitors, families and school groups.
Roof restoration event in June
Residents will also be able to see more of the conservation work behind the scenes at Bramall Hall on Sunday 28 June, from 11am to 4pm.
The free event will focus on the roof restoration, with traditional crafts, conservation techniques and the skills needed to look after a Grade I listed building. Stockport Council said visitors will be able to take part in tours and hands-on activities.
The event is suitable for all ages and is designed to show the kind of specialist work that usually takes place away from public view.
Why Bramall Hall attracts national funding
Bramall Hall’s significance lies in both its age and survival. Timber-framed manor houses are vulnerable to weather, movement, water damage and wear from public use, which makes careful maintenance essential.
Funding through the Museum Estate and Development Fund is intended for exactly that type of pressure: cultural buildings that need investment to remain open, accessible and resilient.
For Stockport, the latest award keeps Bramall Hall in the national conversation around heritage protection while giving the borough another route to maintain a building closely tied to local identity.
The council said it is proud to see the hall recognised as a place of national cultural importance and to continue welcoming people from Stockport and beyond to explore its history.
