Derby’s Duffield Road railings restored for residents: local impact

Historic iron railings on Duffield Road in Derby have been restored after a nine-month conservation project, returning a familiar streetscape feature to the colour and finish it would have had in the late 19th century.

The Grade II-listed railings stand within the Strutt’s Park Conservation Area, north of Derby city centre. Derby City Council said the work formed part of its wider commitment to maintaining local heritage assets, alongside improvements at Five Lamps and further along Duffield Road.

Specialist repairs for 166 bollards and handmade chains

The restoration covered all 166 bollards, as well as the handmade spiked chains and rails. They were removed from the roadside and sent for specialist work by Calibre Metalworks in Stockport.

There, the ironwork was blast-cleaned, repaired where needed and repainted. Conservation paint analysis was used to identify the original colour, so the finished railings now reflect how they would have appeared when first installed.

The project was carried out by local engineering firm Whitehouse Construction, with support from colleagues at Derby City Council and local residents.

A Duffield Road feature dating back to the 1880s

The ironwork was originally cast around 1880 by Derby engineers Chartres & Sons. It was installed as part of an 1881 scheme to widen Duffield Road, which created a raised pavement on one side of the road.

Over time, some of the bollards were replaced by other Derby foundries, including Derwent Castings and Browns Foundry Co. Their protected status reflects both the age of the structure and its place in the character of the Strutt’s Park Conservation Area.

Funding support came from the East Midlands Combined County Authority and the Mayor of the East Midlands.

Councillor Carmel Swan, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Transport, and Sustainability, said the railings were “an iconic feature of Duffield Road” and thanked the ward councillors, funders, Whitehouse Construction and Calibre Metalworks for their role in the restoration.
