Plymouth thanks volunteers with free city events: key details

Plymouth will mark Volunteers’ Week with a programme of free activities and celebration events for people who give their time to local communities.

The city is joining the UK-wide campaign from 1 to 7 June, using the week to recognise volunteers who support vulnerable residents, local services, sports, heritage, wellbeing projects and environmental work.

Free activities run from 1 to 7 June

Plymouth City Council said the programme has been arranged with the city’s Volunteer Coordinators Network and local partners, including The Box, Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, Plymouth Active Leisure, the National Trust, Plymouth Wellbeing Hub Network, Four Greens Community Trust and Jeremiah’s Journey.

The activities are intended as a thank-you for existing volunteers, with extra events taking place across May and June for volunteers and their families. The council said the week is also designed to show the impact of volunteering and encourage more residents to get involved.

Tinside Lido hosts a celebration by the Sound

One of the main celebration events will be held at Tinside Lido, where volunteers are being invited to gather for an evening of music, food and drinks overlooking Plymouth Sound.

The event has been organised by the council and Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Nearly 700 council volunteers support local work

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Community Development, said volunteers were central to life in Plymouth, from caring roles to environmental projects and community activities.

Within the council alone, almost 700 volunteers help services reach more people and create long-term benefits in neighbourhoods across the city.

“Volunteers care for people, animals and the environment; they support sports, activities and buildings; they generously give their time and are the glue that holds society together,” he said.
