Aylesbury school expansion reaches peak as 1,080 places near completion

Construction of the £13 million expansion at The Kingsbrook School in Aylesbury has reached its highest point. The traditional “topping out” ceremony marks a significant phase in the project, which is designed to provide hundreds of additional secondary school places for the rapidly growing local community.

The Kingsbrook School originally opened its doors in September 2022 as a £40 million facility. This latest phase of development, managed by Morgan Sindall Construction, ensures the site can transition from six forms of entry to ten. Once finished, the school will offer 1,080 places, directly addressing the pressure on local infrastructure caused by the surrounding residential developments, though other special school plans in the county have recently been scrapped.

Increased capacity for Aylesbury residential growth

The expansion is a direct response to the Kingsbrook housing project, which is expected to deliver approximately 2,450 new homes. By planning for a ten-form entry from the outset, Buckinghamshire Council and its partners have aimed to minimize future construction disruption while meeting the needs of families moving into the area.

Project Specification Detail
Expansion Investment Approximately £13 million
Total School Capacity 1,080 secondary places
Expected Completion November 2026
Lead Contractor Morgan Sindall Construction
Primary Funding Sources Section 106, Basic Need, Homes England

Beyond just adding classrooms, the project includes the expansion of specialized facilities. Students will have access to upgraded suites for science, technology, music, art, and food technology. The development also places a heavy emphasis on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision, ensuring the curriculum remains accessible as the student body grows.

Sustainable design and modern construction methods

The project incorporates several state-of-the-art sustainability features intended to reduce the long-term carbon footprint of the campus. The completed building will utilize air source heat pumps for all heating and hot water requirements, moving away from traditional fossil fuel systems. Solar panels will also be installed to offset electricity consumption.

In a shift toward greener utility management, gas provision on the site will be strictly limited to science laboratories and food technology rooms. This approach aligns with the wider environmental goals for the Kingsbrook development, which also includes the construction of Orchard View Primary Academy. That facility is slated to become the first “net zero carbon in operation” school within the county.

To support local active travel initiatives, the expansion includes a significant increase in cycle rack capacity. This follows data showing a high number of pupils currently choosing to cycle to the school, reducing the reliance on vehicle drop-offs in the immediate neighborhood.

Funding and infrastructure milestones

Buckinghamshire Council is funding the £13 million phase through a combination of developer contributions (Section 106), Basic Need funding, and support from Homes England via the Housing Infrastructure Fund. This multi-stream funding model highlights the coordination required between local government and national housing agencies to deliver essential services alongside new housing.

Councillor Carl Jackson, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, noted that the expansion is intended to ensure local children have access to high-quality education close to home. He emphasized that as communities grow, the infrastructure must be adaptable and sustainable to meet demand for years to come.

Construction began in October 2025 and remains on schedule for a November 2026 handover. This timeline ensures that the school will be fully operational at its increased capacity for the subsequent academic intake, providing certainty for parents navigating the school admissions process in Aylesbury.
