Vilnius to Host Major Free Youth Mental Health Festival on May 23: what residents need to know

Lithuania’s capital is preparing to transform its iconic White Bridge area into a hub of music, movement, and mental health awareness. On May 23, Vilnius will host the second annual “Happy Youth Day” (Laimingo jaunimo diena), a free festival designed to bridge the gap between Lithuania’s high international happiness rankings and the lived reality of its younger generation.

While recent global reports have placed Lithuanian youth among the happiest in the world, local data paints a more complex picture. Research indicates that up to 93% of young people in the country experience emotional difficulties. The “Jaunimo linija” (Youth Line), a primary emotional support service, receives approximately 50,000 calls and messages annually—a figure that remains stubbornly high. This festival aims to destigmatize these struggles through a combination of community engagement and high-energy entertainment.

Event Schedule and Activities

The festival is designed as a multi-stage experience, beginning in the early afternoon and culminating in a major live concert. The organizers have structured the day to address physical, financial, and emotional well-being.

  • 14:00 – The Wellness Hike: The day kicks off with a guided walk titled “Easy Steps with Swedbank,” organized by the Walk15 app. Starting from the White Bridge (Baltasis tiltas), the hike encourages participants to disconnect from digital screens and focus on physical movement and interpersonal connection.
  • 16:00 – The Happiness Meadow (Laimės pieva): The green space near the bridge will host an open-air fair featuring creative workshops, active games, and moderated discussions. This zone is designed as a safe space for young people to learn about emotional resilience and financial health in a low-pressure environment.
  • Evening – Live Concert: As the sun sets, the main stage will feature a lineup of prominent Lithuanian artists. Performers include Pijus Opera, Monika Pundziūtė (Monique), the bands SHWR and Saulės kliošas, and the group Galera. A “secret guest” is also scheduled to close the night.

Addressing the Happiness Paradox

The event is a collaborative effort between the Vilnius City Municipality, the “Jaunimo linija” NGO, and private partners. The initiative stems from a need to create an environment where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength rather than a failure.

Diana Bukantaitė, head of “Jaunimo linija,” emphasizes that the festival is about more than just a single day of fun. “If we want an emotionally resilient future for Lithuania, we must care for the emotional health of our youth today,” she notes. The goal is to foster a culture where young people feel safe talking about their feelings and better understanding themselves through connection and community.

Vilnius Vice-Mayor Simona Bieliūnė highlighted the city’s strategic role in this mission. With a quarter of all Lithuanian children living in the capital, the municipality is leveraging partnerships with trusted organizations like “Jaunimo linija” to reach a wider audience. By integrating mental health resources into a popular music festival format, the city hopes to increase awareness of the free services available to residents.

Practical Information for Attendees

The festival is entirely free and open to the public, with no tickets required for the workshops or the concert. The White Bridge area is a central landmark in Vilnius, easily accessible by public transport or by foot from the Old Town.

For those unable to attend in person, the “Power Hit Radio” team will be broadcasting live from the site, featuring interviews with performers and mental health experts throughout the afternoon. Detailed information and resources for emotional support can be found on the official event website at jaunimolinija.lt.
