Vilnius Pink Soup Fest: A Three-Day Celebration of Culture and Cuisine

Lithuania’s capital is preparing to turn a vibrant shade of fuchsia once again. From May 29 to 31, the “Vilnius Pink Soup Fest” returns, celebrating the country’s most iconic summer dish: šaltibarščiai (cold beetroot soup). This year, the festival, organized by the city’s tourism and business development agency Go Vilnius, has expanded from a single-day event into a comprehensive three-day cultural programme featuring some of the country’s most prominent musical acts and entertainers.

For those unfamiliar with the dish, šaltibarščiai is a chilled, kefir-based soup made with shredded beets, cucumbers, and dill, traditionally served with hot boiled potatoes. While it is a staple of Lithuanian home cooking, the festival elevates it into a city-wide phenomenon, with restaurants, cafes, and public spaces all adopting the “pink” theme to welcome the summer season.

A Weekend Guide to the Pink Festivities

The 2024 edition marks a significant shift in the festival’s scale. For the first time, the entertainment schedule spans the entire weekend, offering a mix of live music, stand-up comedy, and community gatherings.

Friday, May 29: The Grand Opening
The festivities begin at 7:00 PM in the historic Town Hall Square (Rotušės aikštė). The opening night lineup includes:
* Black Biceps: Returning for their second year, the group will perform alongside an eight-piece orchestra, promising a high-energy start to the weekend.
* K2 Comedy: A highlight for many will be the “Pink Soup Trial.” In an absurd comedy format, performers will attempt to settle the long-standing regional debate: who truly owns the recipe for cold beet soup—Lithuania, Latvia, or Poland?
* Despotin Fam: One of Lithuania’s most respected hip-hop collectives will close the first night, performing with a live band for the first time at this festival.

Saturday, May 30: Pop and R&B Night
The action remains at Town Hall Square, starting at 8:00 PM, with a focus on contemporary sounds:
* Angelou: Known for her smooth R&B and soul-infused pop, Angelou’s performance is expected to bring a “fresh lightness” to the festival atmosphere.
* Donatas Montvydas: One of Lithuania’s biggest pop stars and a former Eurovision contestant, Montvydas will headline the Saturday stage. He has noted that his performance will feature specific “pink” stylistic elements to match the festival’s aesthetic, marking his first major concert of the summer season.

Sunday, May 31: The Riverside Finale
The final day moves the party to the White Bridge (Baltasis tiltas), a popular local hangout spot by the Neris River.
* Sandra Carrillo: Starting at 3:00 PM, the Spanish-born artist, well-known in Lithuania for her Latin-pop fusion, will provide the soundtrack for the festival’s closing ceremony, bringing a summery, Mediterranean vibe to the Baltic capital.

More Than Just Music

While the stages provide the soundtrack, the heart of the festival lies in the culinary creativity found throughout Vilnius. Over the three days, more than 100 local businesses are expected to offer special pink-themed menus. This ranges from traditional bowls of soup to more experimental offerings like pink coffee, beetroot-infused desserts, and even pink-themed cocktails.

Eglė Girdzijauskaitė, Head of Communications at Go Vilnius, emphasizes that the festival is designed to be inclusive. “We want the pink weekend in Vilnius to have more different colors and sounds,” she explained. “There is room for live sound, pop music, rap, and comedy. Every visitor will find something to their taste—both on the plate and on the stage.”

For international visitors, the festival offers a unique entry point into Lithuanian culture. It is a rare example of a city using a single culinary item to foster community spirit and drive tourism, effectively turning a traditional recipe into a modern, Instagrammable urban celebration.
