Stockport celebrates one million visits to Stockroom cultural hub

Samantha Smith, a local schoolteacher, walked into Stockroom with her two-year-old daughter, Alba, expecting a quiet morning planning a half-term visit for her pupils. Instead, she was met with cheers, confetti, and the news that she was the one-millionth person to pass through the doors of Stockport’s central creative and cultural hub. The milestone, reached in less than a year since the venue opened in May 2025, highlights the rapid integration of the space into the daily lives of residents.

Samantha and Alba were presented with a commemorative certificate and exclusive Stockroom merchandise to mark the occasion. For Samantha, the venue has served as a vital resource since her daughter was an infant, providing a space where children can play while parents connect over coffee. As a teacher, she noted the importance of the facility’s free public access computers and library services for the wider community.

A milestone for Stockport town centre regeneration

The success of Stockroom is a visible indicator of the ongoing transformation within Stockport. Positioned at the heart of the town, the centre was designed to drive footfall and bring new energy to the high street. The impact has extended beyond its own walls, contributing to Merseyway Shopping Centre recording its busiest year in 2025, with total footfall exceeding 11.4 million visits.

Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, described the one million visits as a testament to how residents have reclaimed the town centre. The space is used by a diverse demographic, from students revising after college and parents attending storytime sessions to older residents dropping in for social connection. The council views the venue as a successful model for how culture and community-led spaces can anchor urban regeneration efforts.

Beyond the headline numbers, the daily usage patterns suggest the venue has become a ‘third space’ for the town. Cllr Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member responsible for Culture, noted that the speed at which the community adopted the space exceeded initial expectations. Whether visitors arrive for specific workshops or simply to find a welcoming place to sit, the venue has established a unique energy that supports the wider town centre economy.

Free events planned for Stockroom first birthday weekend

The million-visit milestone arrives just days before Stockroom celebrates its first anniversary. A three-day programme of free activities is scheduled from 22–24 May 2026, designed to showcase the variety of services the hub provides.
