Sefton food waste trucks get names from residents

By munisha.co.uk

Sefton residents, schoolchildren and council staff will soon see their ideas on the borough’s new food waste recycling vehicles, after 14 winning names were chosen from more than 200 competition entries.

Sefton Council said the names will be displayed on the new fleet as the borough prepares to introduce its food waste recycling service this winter.

Some names were submitted by more than one person. The selected entries came from Sefton residents, school pupils and council employees.

A judging panel included council leader Cllr Marion Atkinson, cabinet member for Cleansing and Street Scene Cllr Peter Harvey, and operational staff.

Schoolchildren and residents shape a visible local service

The naming competition gave households a small but visible role in the new recycling service. Food waste vehicles will become a regular sight on local streets once collections begin, carrying names picked by the same communities they serve.

Cllr Atkinson said it was “fantastic” to receive so many ideas, including from schoolchildren, and congratulated the winners. Cllr Harvey said choosing 14 names had been difficult because of the number of creative entries.

Food waste collections are now due this winter

Sefton Council had originally been working towards an April 1 rollout, but said it could not meet that date because of national pressure on councils ordering vehicles, equipment and materials at the same time.

The council said it had taken part in a joint Liverpool City Region procurement process and secured vehicle build slots in advance, but manufacturers still faced delivery delays.

Food caddies have already arrived in Sefton and are being stored ahead of distribution to residents. Similar food waste rollout updates are also being watched in other areas, including Wolverhampton’s autumn collections.
