Plymouth families get free Big Green Trail day

The inflatable obstacle course is one of the first signs that The Big Green Trail is not being pitched as a lecture. When it returns to Central Park in Plymouth, families will be able to move between nature activities, creative workshops, cycling checks and local climate projects across the park.

The free community festival takes place on Saturday 20 June 2026, from 10am to 3pm, at Central Park, Plymouth. It is aimed at families and residents, with no booking required.

Organiser Climate Connections, a Plymouth City Council project

Led by Climate Connections and supported by local organisations and community groups, the day is built around a trail format. Visitors can explore activity stops across Central Park at their own pace rather than following a fixed stage schedule.

A specially designed Big Green Trail activity pack will help families move around the park, collecting stamps at each stop and turning the route into a mini adventure. That format should suit mixed-age groups who want a flexible day out rather than a timed programme.

Nature, crafts and hands-on climate action

The trail brings together outdoor play, wildlife learning and practical climate ideas. Westcountry Rivers Trust will run an inflatable obstacle course designed as a playful way to explore how rivers work.

National Trust and Green Communities will offer nature crafts, wildlife identification and guided walks. Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and Ocean Conservation Trust will bring marine games and ocean artefacts, giving children and adults a closer look at Plymouth’s coastal environment.

Other organisations taking part include RSPB, Devon Wildlife Trust and Dartmoor Zoo, with activities linked to local wildlife and conservation. Creative stops include Climate Action Plymouth’s Haikus for Hope, alongside reuse and making activities from Plymouth Scrapstore and Sewcial Guild’s Sew on the Road.

The practical side of the programme includes a free bike service and safety check from Dr Bike. Local transport organisations will also run cycling challenges, while Plymouth Energy Community and Eljay Energy will use interactive games to cover renewable energy and home advice.

The event will also feature the Local Climate Legend Living Room, where visitors can watch short films and hear stories about residents, community groups and organisations taking environmental action in Plymouth.

Getting there on the day

Plymouth Citybus will run a free hop-on, hop-off trail bus for the event. Pick-up points listed for the day are Royal Parade, George Park and Ride, and Milehouse Park and Ride.

For visitors travelling by bike, Beryl will offer one free ride per person, covering 20 minutes of riding plus a free unlock. The source says no code is required for that offer.

The event details released by Plymouth City Council do not list specific accessibility arrangements or food stall information. Visitors planning around those needs should use the confirmed details above: Central Park, 10am to 3pm, free entry, no booking required, and the free trail bus pick-up points on the day.

Tom Briars-Delve, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “The Big Green Trail is a fantastic way for people of all ages to get outdoors and learn more about the small changes we can all make to protect our environment.”
