More than 20 major road segments across North Northamptonshire are scheduled for immediate surface dressing as the council launches a repair program significantly larger than in previous years. This infrastructure push follows a challenging winter where fluctuating temperatures and heavy rainfall accelerated the deterioration of the local network.
Priority routes for the 2026 repair program
The current schedule targets high-traffic A-roads and critical bypasses that have shown early signs of surface wear. By applying treatments now, North Northamptonshire Council aims to seal the road surfaces against water ingress, preventing the formation of deeper potholes during future winter cycles.
| Road / Route | Location / Area |
|---|---|
| A47 Wandsford Road | Duddington |
| A6116 Bypass | Lowick |
| A427 Weldon Road | Benefield |
| A4300 Stamford Road | Geddington |
| A6003 Uppingham Road | Corby |
| A427 Stoke Hill | Stoke Albany |
| A43 Stamford Road | Kettering |
| A43 Rockingham Road | Rushton |
| A6 Rothwell/Desborough Bypass | Desborough |
| B576 Harborough Road | Desborough |
| A43 Kettering Road | Sywell |
| A4500 Wellingborough Road | Earls Barton |
| Station Road | Bozeat |
| Harrold Road | Bozeat |
Additional works are also confirmed for Ashton Wold, Church Way and Eagle Lane in Thorpe Malsor, Harrington Road in Loddington, and Old Road in Broughton. Residents in Sywell and Mears Ashby will also see crews on Wellingborough Road as part of the coordinated effort.
How surface dressing protects local routes
Surface dressing is utilized as a cost-effective preventative measure rather than a total reconstruction. The process involves spraying a thin film of bitumen onto the existing road, followed by layers of stone chippings. These chippings are rolled into the bitumen to create an interlocking, skid-resistant surface.
While the treatment prolongs the life of the highway, it requires specific environmental conditions. Bitumen bonds most effectively to dry surfaces during spring and summer months. Consequently, work cannot proceed during periods of excessive heat, rain, or cold, which may lead to short-notice shifts in the local scheduling.
Safety measures and post-repair maintenance
Full road closures are necessary to complete the dressing safely and quickly. Although the new surface can be driven on almost immediately, a temporary 20mph speed limit will be strictly enforced on all newly treated sections. These restrictions protect road workers and prevent damage to vehicles from loose chippings.
Highways teams are scheduled to return to each site 24 hours after the initial application to sweep away loose material. A second sweep typically occurs four to five days later. Drivers are urged to maintain reduced speeds until the final sweeping process is complete and permanent road markings are restored.
