Nighttime Traffic Restrictions on A4 Riga Bypass: Mazā Jugla Bridge Renovation Begins

The A4 bypass (Baltezers–Saulkalne) is a critical artery for both local commuters and international logistics, forming a key part of the Via Baltica network. As of early May, motorists should expect significant changes to traffic flow near the 14.10 km mark. The bridge over the Mazā Jugla river is undergoing essential maintenance to ensure long-term safety and structural durability. While daytime travel remains largely unhindered, the implementation of nighttime restrictions is necessary to facilitate complex engineering tasks.

Current Traffic Restrictions and Schedule

To minimize disruption during peak hours, the project utilizes a dual-mode traffic management system. During the day, both lanes remain open to accommodate the high volume of transit vehicles and local traffic. However, as evening approaches, the site transitions to a single-lane configuration.

Time Window Traffic Arrangement
07:00 – 20:00 Normal flow (both lanes open)
20:00 – 07:00 Single-lane traffic (regulated by lights)

Drivers traveling between 8:00 PM and 7:00 AM should anticipate delays, as the temporary traffic lights will manage alternating flow through the construction zone.

Project Scope and Infrastructure Improvements

The renovation, commissioned by Latvian State Roads (VSIA “Latvijas Valsts ceļi”), focuses on two primary technical areas: the replacement of expansion joints and the renewal of the asphalt surface. Expansion joints are critical components that allow the bridge structure to expand and contract with temperature changes without cracking. Replacing these, alongside a fresh asphalt concrete top layer, will significantly improve the driving surface and protect the bridge’s foundation from water ingress.

The project is being executed by the “SMA-BALTIJAS BŪVE” partnership. The total investment for these works is €470,555, including VAT. To ensure all technical standards are met, the engineering firm SIA “Teede insenerid” is providing independent construction supervision throughout the duration of the project.

Travel Planning and Completion Timeline

The renovation is moving at a brisk pace, with a target completion date set for the end of May. This timeline is designed to finalize the most intrusive works before the peak summer travel season begins.

For those planning trips across the Rīga bypass, it is recommended to monitor real-time traffic maps, especially during the transition periods at 07:00 and 20:00. While the nighttime restrictions are the most significant hurdle, the resulting improvements will provide a smoother and safer crossing over the Mazā Jugla for years to come. Local residents in the Salaspils and Stopiņi areas are encouraged to allow an extra 10-15 minutes for nighttime journeys.
