Milton Keynes City Council has recognised local Family Centre volunteers with a lunch and awards presentation during Volunteers’ Week, which ran from 1 to 7 June.
The event marked the work of more than 50 volunteers who support the city’s 10 Family Centres alongside council staff. According to the council, the centres welcome more than 5,000 residents each month and remain open throughout the year.

More than 50 volunteers support 10 centres
Volunteers help with the daily work that keeps the centres accessible for families and adults seeking support. Their roles include welcoming visitors, setting up group activities, answering phones and helping with gardening.
They also support the local Community Larder, organising and distributing food and household essentials to residents who need extra help.

Confidence, connection and routes into work
The council shared accounts from volunteers who said the work had helped them build skills and confidence.
RJ, a volunteer at Moorlands Family Centre, said the opportunity came while they were feeling isolated and struggling. Volunteering helped them make new connections, improve their wellbeing and look for work. They are now working part-time at the centre.

Maria, a volunteer at Hedgerows Family Centre, said helping families and children had been positive and rewarding, and had inspired her to pursue a career in childcare.
Awards lunch marks Volunteers’ Week
Councillor Peter Cannon, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, thanked volunteers for the time, care and dedication they bring to the Family Centres.
He said their contribution helps centre teams reach more people and offer a wider range of support across Milton Keynes.
