Manchester prepares solemn tributes for Arena attack anniversary

Manchester will pause this Friday, 22 May, to mark the ninth anniversary of the 2017 Arena attack with a series of civic tributes and moments of silence across the city centre. The Glade of Light Memorial, located near Manchester Cathedral, remains the primary focal point for personal reflection, where residents and visitors are expected to gather throughout the day to honor the 22 people who lost their lives.

On Friday morning, the city’s leadership will formalize the remembrance. The new Lord Mayor of Manchester, Cllr Shaukat Ali, will be joined by Council Leader Cllr Bev Craig OBE and Council Chief Executive Tom Stannard to lay floral tributes on behalf of the city. This act of remembrance at the white marble ‘halo’ memorial serves as a continued promise to the families of the bereaved that their loved ones are not forgotten as the city moves toward a decade since the tragedy.

Prayer services and the reading of names at Manchester Cathedral

Manchester Cathedral will play a central role in the day’s spiritual observances, offering a space for quiet prayer and the lighting of candles. The names of the 22 victims will be read aloud during three specific services, ensuring each individual is remembered by name within the heart of the city.

These readings are scheduled for 9:30 AM during Morning Prayers, 1:10 PM during Holy Communion, and 4:30 PM during Choral Evensong. The Cathedral remains open to the public for the duration of the day, providing a sanctuary for those who may find the anniversary particularly challenging. The Glade of Light, which features the names of those killed carved into white Carrara marble, provides a physical extension of this remembrance just outside the Cathedral’s doors.

Victoria Station to observe moments of silence at midday and 10:31 PM

Two distinct one-minute silences will be held at Manchester Victoria Station, a location inextricably linked to the events of 2017. The first silence will take place at 12:00 PM, followed immediately by prayers led by the Railway Chaplain at the station’s permanent memorial. This midday gathering allows commuters and station staff to participate in the city-wide act of reflection.

The second silence is scheduled for 10:31 PM, marking the exact moment the attack occurred nine years ago. This late-night tribute is traditionally a more private, somber affair, attended by those who wish to stand in solidarity at the precise anniversary hour.

Council Leader Cllr Bev Craig OBE emphasized that while time passes, the city’s resilience remains unchanged. She noted that the anniversary is not only a time to remember those lost but also to acknowledge the remarkable solidarity shown by Manchester in the aftermath. The city continues to reject hatred, focusing instead on the courage shown by survivors and the families of the victims.

As the ninth anniversary concludes with the 10:31 PM silence, the city begins its transition toward the tenth anniversary in 2027, which is expected to see a significant national commemoration.
