The A1 motorway, Lithuania’s primary transport artery connecting the capital Vilnius with the second-largest city Kaunas and the port of Klaipėda, is entering a period of significant disruption. Starting this Saturday, the state-owned road infrastructure company Via Lietuva will implement traffic restrictions on a critical 5-kilometre stretch, marking the beginning of a major renovation project scheduled to last until October.
The works will focus on the right-hand side of the highway (heading from Vilnius toward Kaunas) between the 89.42 km and 94.34 km marks. This specific section begins near the turn-off for Neveronys and concludes at the Biruliškės junction, commonly known as the Murava intersection. While the main construction phase is slated to begin on Monday, the initial traffic management measures will be visible from Saturday morning.
The ‘3+1’ Traffic Arrangement
To mitigate the impact on the thousands of commuters and logistics providers who use this route daily, authorities are implementing a “3+1” traffic scheme. Under this arrangement, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. However, this requires shifting lanes into unconventional configurations.
Transport officials have issued a specific warning to drivers: lane selection will be critical. Because the traffic flow will be redirected, motorists intending to exit the highway into specific local territories must choose the correct lane well in advance. Failure to do so may result in being unable to reach local junctions without significant detours.
Technical Scope and Regional Impact
The renovation is not merely a surface-level fix. According to Via Lietuva, the project involves milling the existing asphalt, strengthening the road base, and installing entirely new asphalt layers to ensure long-term durability. The project also includes the modernization of surface water drainage systems—such as culverts, gutters, and wells—and the renewal of road markings and safety barriers.
Simultaneously, the viaduct on the Ramučiai–Martinava regional road (Route 1919), which crosses over the A1, will undergo essential repairs. This work includes fixing concrete structures, updating expansion joints, and improving drainage to ensure the bridge remains safe for local traffic.

A Nationwide Infrastructure Push
This project is part of a broader, more aggressive strategy to address Lithuania’s aging road network. Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas noted that the A1 and A2 (Vilnius–Panevėžys) highways are the focus of intense activity this year, with over 120 kilometres of these main arteries and 24 bridges and viaducts scheduled for repair.
“Our goal is clear: after these works, Lithuanian roads must be safer and more comfortable to navigate,” Taminskas stated. The current surge in repairs is a direct response to years of underfunding and the impact of harsh winter conditions, which have left many sections of the national highway system with significant cracking and potholes.
Via Lietuva, which manages over 21,000 km of national roads and 1,500 bridges, has warned that this is only the beginning. By 2026, the company aims to have repaired approximately 170 km of the country’s worst-performing road sections. For international travelers and local commuters alike, the message is clear: expect delays, plan for longer journey times, and consider alternative routes where possible during this intensive summer of construction.
