Kaunas Unveils Modernised Lampėdis Lake Beach for Summer Season

Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-largest city, is set to officially open its summer swimming season on June 1st with a significant upgrade to one of its most popular natural landmarks. The shores of Lampėdis Lake have undergone a comprehensive transformation, evolving from a simple swimming spot into a modern, inclusive leisure zone equipped with international-standard sports facilities and enhanced public amenities.

While the northern shore near the local campsite has long been a staple for holidaymakers, this year’s focus has shifted to the southern and eastern banks. The municipality’s investment aims to meet contemporary recreational demands, balancing active sports with family-oriented leisure. The project reflects a broader European trend of revitalising urban water bodies to improve the quality of life for city residents.

Comprehensive Infrastructure and Inclusivity

The most notable changes are situated near Gervių Street, where the southern part of the lake has been entirely redesigned. The new infrastructure prioritises accessibility, ensuring that the beach is welcoming to all citizens, including those with disabilities and the visually impaired. New ramps, specialised paths, and information stands featuring Braille have been installed to make the area truly inclusive.

Visitors this June will find a fully equipped public beach featuring new changing cabins, lifeguard stations, and automated public toilets. To further enhance the visitor experience, the city has installed outdoor showers and water fountains. For families and fitness enthusiasts, the zone now includes dedicated children’s playgrounds and an outdoor gym area.

Location / Milestone Key Development Details
Official Season Start June 1st across all municipal beaches
Lampėdis Lake (South) New accessible ramps, Braille stands, and gym zones
Traffic Management New parking lot and restricted access on Gervių St
International Sports Completion of the rowing track and upcoming judge’s tower
Secondary Sites Upgrades at Kaunas Reservoir and Panemunė beach

To address previous issues with chaotic parking and pedestrian safety, the city has implemented a new traffic management plan. A spacious parking lot has been established at the entrance to the recreational zone, and a new barrier system on Gervių Street will restrict vehicle access further into the beach area, creating a safer environment for walkers and cyclists.

A Hub for International Water Sports

Beyond leisure, Lampėdis Lake is being positioned as a premier venue for competitive water sports. Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis noted that significant attention has been paid to the lake bed itself, which has been cleaned and levelled to accommodate a professional rowing track.

By the end of the year, the city plans to complete a new international-standard judge’s tower, a requirement for hosting high-level rowing competitions. This dual-purpose approach—combining public recreation with professional sporting infrastructure—is designed to maximise the utility of the city’s natural assets throughout the year.

City-Wide Preparations for the Summer Heat

The renovations at Lampėdis are part of a wider effort to prepare Kaunas for the summer months. Similar maintenance work is being carried out at the Kaunas Reservoir (Kauno marios) near the historic Pažaislis Monastery and at the Panemunė beach along A. Smetonos Avenue.

Preparations include the replenishment of beach sand, the repair of benches and changing rooms, and rigorous safety protocols. The Kaunas sports school “Bangpūtys” is currently forming lifeguard teams, while environmental specialists have begun testing water quality and sand hygiene. These tests, conducted throughout May, ensure that all official swimming sites meet strict health standards before the public arrives in June.
