Islington residents to see new focus on housing and safety under new Executive

New leadership team confirmed for Islington

Following the recent local elections, Cllr Una O’Halloran, Leader of Islington Council, has confirmed the appointment of a new Executive team. This group of nine councillors will hold responsibility for the borough’s major policy decisions and service delivery over the next four-year term. The transition marks a shift in focus toward immediate local priorities, with the leadership stating a clear mandate to address the specific challenges facing residents in 2026.

The new Executive is tasked with delivering a program centered on equality and public service improvements. Cllr O’Halloran emphasized that the administration’s primary objective is to make the borough a fairer place by concentrating on the issues that residents have identified as most urgent, including neighborhood security and the availability of social housing.

Portfolio responsibilities for the 2026-2030 term

The newly appointed members will oversee specific departments, ensuring accountability for the council’s statutory duties and strategic goals. The Executive members and their respective portfolios are:

  • Cllr Una O’Halloran: Leader of the Council
  • Cllr Ruth Hayes: Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Health and Social Care
  • Cllr Paul Convery: Executive Member for Finance
  • Cllr Jason Jackson: Executive Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods
  • Cllr Rowena Champion: Executive Member for Climate, Environment, and Transport
  • Cllr Heather Staff: Executive Member for Community Safety and Neighbourhoods
  • Cllr James Potts: Executive Member for Inclusive Economy and Planning
  • Cllr Sheila Chapman: Executive Member for Children, Young People, and Families
  • Cllr Saiqa Pandor: Executive Member for Communities and Partnerships

These appointments bring together a mix of experienced representatives and those taking on new challenges within the cabinet structure. Each member is expected to develop detailed strategies for their departments in the coming months, focusing on measurable outcomes for the Islington community.

Immediate priorities for housing and community safety

The administration has identified three key areas for immediate action: public safety, housing development, and financial support for vulnerable households. To address anti-social behavior, the council has committed to the installation of new CCTV cameras across various neighborhoods. This move is intended to provide a visible deterrent and assist in local policing efforts.

In terms of housing, the Executive plans to accelerate the construction of “genuinely affordable” homes. Cllr O’Halloran noted that the council is ready to put “spades in the ground” to tackle the borough’s housing waiting list. Additionally, the leadership is preparing measures to reduce utility bills and provide direct support to those most affected by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Residents can expect further announcements regarding specific project timelines and budget allocations as the new Executive begins its formal sessions. The focus remains on fulfilling the promises made during the election cycle and ensuring that local government remains responsive to the needs of the Islington public.
