Islington names Rosaline Ogunro as new mayor

Councillor Rosaline Ogunro has been sworn in as Mayor of Islington for 2026/27, taking over the civic role after Wednesday’s Annual Council meeting.

The St Peter’s and Canalside councillor will use her mayoral year to support two local charities: St Luke’s Community Centre and Islington Boat Club. The mayoral charities are traditionally chosen by each incoming mayor and become a focus for fundraising and public support during the year.

Rosaline Ogunro’s council background

Councillor Rosaline Ogunro has served as an Islington councillor since May 2022. During that time, she has sat on several council committees, including Homes and Communities Scrutiny, Children and Young People Scrutiny, Planning, and Licensing.

The Mayor of Islington is a civic role, representing the borough at local events, ceremonies and community occasions. Cllr Ogunro succeeds Cllr Jason Jackson, whose mayoral year supported Islington Giving, a local coalition funding community projects including work around mental health and employment opportunities for young people.

St Luke’s Community Centre provides activities for residents across different age groups, including lunches, classes and intergenerational activities bringing primary school children and older people together.

Islington Boat Club offers water sports activities and training, with a focus on young people, people with additional needs and older residents who need extra support. Its courses are designed to be accessible and to help participants build practical life skills.

Wednesday’s meeting also formally confirmed the new Executive, led by Council Leader Cllr Una O’Halloran.
