Hounslow mayor begins year with dementia charity focus

Hounslow Council has appointed Councillor Ranjit Gill as Mayor of Hounslow for the 2026-27 civic year, with Councillor Sahibaa Hussain named Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Gill, who has lived in the borough for more than 40 years, now represents Osterley and Spring Grove ward after the May 2026 local elections. He was first elected to Hounslow Council in 2018 for Chiswick Gunnersbury ward.

New civic role for Ranjit Gill

The Mayor of Hounslow is a largely ceremonial role, focused on representing the Council at civic events, supporting community organisations and acting as an ambassador for the borough.

During his time as a councillor, Gill has served on council committees and panels including Audit and Governance, Licensing, the Housing and Environment Scrutiny Panel and the Pension Board.

Away from formal council duties, he has volunteered with Café Together, which supports homeless and vulnerable residents, and has taken part in community clean-up work. Hounslow Council said he is also focused on protecting and improving green spaces, shaped by a long-standing interest in wildlife and nature shared with his late partner, Peter.

Speaking after his appointment, Gill said it was a “great honour” to serve as mayor and said he looked forward to meeting residents and supporting community work across Hounslow.

Dementia services chosen as mayoral charity

Gill has chosen Age UK Hounslow Dementia Services as his charity for the mayoral year.

The service supports residents living with dementia and memory challenges, as well as carers and loved ones. Its free Dementia Station in Feltham hosts weekly gatherings with dementia-friendly activities including singing, music, storytelling and art.

Council leader Councillor Shantanu Rajawat congratulated Gill on the appointment, citing his experience in public service and work with local communities and the environment.

Further details about the Mayor’s chosen charity and upcoming civic engagements are expected to be announced by Hounslow Council in due course.
