Hackney residents are being asked to help provide secondary school starter packs for local children moving from Year 6 into Year 7 this September.
The Pack To School Appeal is collecting new school essentials before 31 July 2026. Residents can support the campaign by buying an item from the appeal list or, if they prefer to shop locally, purchasing supplies and dropping them off in person at Forest Road Youth Hub.
Donations needed before 31 July
The appeal is focused on practical items that pupils need at the start of secondary school. Each school pack is expected to include core classroom supplies, including:
- a new rucksack
- a geometry set
- pens
- a scientific calculator
Hackney Youth Parliament has also identified extra items that can help pupils feel more prepared and confident as they begin secondary school. Residents who want the full list of requested items, including suggested places to buy them, are being directed to the Young Hackney page for the campaign.

Items should be new and suitable for pupils starting secondary school. The appeal is aimed at helping children make the move into Year 7 with the basic supplies they need from the first week of term.
Why the appeal is focused on Year 7 pupils
The move from primary to secondary school often brings a fresh list of costs for families, from bags and stationery to equipment required for maths and science lessons.
Hackney Youth Parliament said around 64% of children in Hackney live in low-income households, making the start of the school year a financial pressure point for many families. This year is the fourth running of the Pack To School Appeal.
The group said the campaign has already helped hundreds of young people start secondary school feeling prepared, confident and ready to learn.
How residents can support the campaign
Anyone who wants to take part can check the Young Hackney campaign information, choose an item from the appeal list, and either arrange their donation through the listed route or buy locally and drop supplies at Forest Road Youth Hub.
Hackney Youth Parliament said: “As we launch this year’s appeal, we’re asking the community to help us reach even more young people across the borough and give them a positive start to secondary school.”
