Free Armed Forces Day in Scarborough: parade and air display times

Scarborough’s seafront is set for a full day of aircraft displays, marching bands and ceremonial parades when Armed Forces Day returns on Saturday, 27 June.

The free public event runs from 11am to 5pm in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, with North Yorkshire Council hosting the celebration for residents, visitors, families, veterans, service families and cadets. The day will include RAF displays, a veterans’ parade, cadet performances, live music and a first appearance at the event by the Chelsea Pensioners. A Scarborough event guide is also available for readers planning their visit.

Air display times over Scarborough

Six aerial displays are scheduled across the day, beginning late in the morning and continuing through the afternoon.

Time Display
11.30am RAF Chinook flypast
11.40am RAF Tutor T Mark 1 precision display
1.30pm Hawker Fury display
2.30pm Calidus AutoGyro display
3.30pm RAF Supermarine Spitfire display
4.05pm RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 display

The opening flypast will come from the RAF Chinook, one of the RAF’s most recognisable aircraft. Later in the day, the RAF Supermarine Spitfire is due to return to Scarborough’s skies before the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 closes the air programme with the headline display.

The air displays form one of the main draws for the event, but the council has also confirmed a full ground programme across the day.

Parades, bands and military performances

On the ground, Armed Forces Day Scarborough will feature traditional military marches, band displays, presentations and live music throughout the afternoon.

Scarborough Sea Cadets, veterans, standards and cadets’ parades are among the confirmed elements. The parades will be led by the Queen’s Own Yeomanry and the Yorkshire Volunteers Band.

This year’s programme also includes a Chelsea Pensioners display, which North Yorkshire Council said will be their first appearance at Scarborough Armed Forces Day.

Council leader Carl Les described the event as a show of unity, pride and community spirit, adding that it is one of hundreds of Armed Forces Day events held across the country to support serving personnel, service families, veterans and cadets.

For readers looking at other events on the same national day, munisha.co.uk has also covered a free Armed Forces Day event in Wolverhampton with a parade, live music and family activities.

Who the day is for

The event is aimed at the general public, including families, veterans, service families and visitors to the Yorkshire coast. Thousands of people are expected in the resort to mark the contribution of the Armed Forces community.

North Yorkshire has a significant military presence, with more than 12,000 people working for the Ministry of Defence and 3,000 children from service families in schools. The county is home to Catterick Garrison, RAF stations at Leeming, Fylingdales and Menwith Hill, and the Army Foundation College in Harrogate.

North Yorkshire Council is hosting the event as part of its commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant. The county was among the first places in the UK to have such a covenant, intended to support access to services for military personnel and veterans.

Council Armed Forces champion Kevin Foster said Armed Forces Day is always a highlight for Scarborough and gives residents and visitors a chance to show appreciation for serving personnel, veterans, cadets and their families.

Date, time, entry and opening ceremony

Armed Forces Day Scarborough takes place on Saturday, 27 June, from 11am to 5pm. Entry is free and the event is open to the public.

The official opening of the event will be marked earlier in the week, when Army Cadets lead a flag-raising at Scarborough Town Hall on Monday, 22 June.

Scarborough’s Armed Forces Day is sponsored by Skipton Building Society for the second year running.
