Croydon has appointed Councillor Mohammed Islam as its new Civic Mayor following a special mayor-making ceremony at Annual Council on 27 May 2026.
Councillor Islam, who represents Selhurst ward, has lived in Croydon since 1980 after moving from Ipswich. He has lived in Selhurst for 22 years with his wife, Farhana, and their four children, and works as an approved driving instructor.
The appointment places him in Croydon’s main ceremonial civic role for the year, representing the borough at public events and community occasions.
Selhurst councillor with long community ties
Councillor Islam is a founding member of the British Bangladeshi Society of Croydon, which provides educational, cultural and wellbeing support in the borough.
He said his term would focus on inclusion, mutual respect and bringing communities together across Croydon. His chosen charities are expected to be confirmed shortly.

“It is a privilege and a tremendous honour to serve as Civic Mayor and to represent our diverse borough in a role dedicated to public service,” Councillor Islam said.
He added that he wanted residents, community groups and local organisations to feel represented and valued during the year ahead.
Civic Mayor role is separate from Executive Mayor
Croydon Council said the Civic Mayor carries out ceremonial and public duties. The role is different from the Executive Mayor, who is elected by residents every four years to lead the council.
Councillor Scott Roche, who represents Shirley South ward, has been appointed Deputy Civic Mayor. He previously served as cabinet member for streets and environment, covering areas including transport, sustainability and environmental services.

Before entering local government, Councillor Roche worked in Parliament as a senior caseworker for MPs.
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, congratulated Councillor Islam and Councillor Roche on taking up the civic posts.
Residents and organisations who want the Civic Mayor or Deputy Civic Mayor to attend a community event are being asked to apply through the council website at least two weeks in advance.
