Bexley gets 400 lamp-post EV chargers

Bexley residents now have access to 400 new lamp-post electric vehicle charge points across the borough, after Bexley Council completed a rollout with ubitricity.

The chargers are aimed at drivers who do not have a private driveway or home charging point. They have been fitted into existing residential lamp posts, so residents can plug in close to home without new charging posts being added to pavements.

The cheapest charging window runs overnight, from midnight to 7am, at 44p per kWh through ubitricity’s Shell Smart Charging system.

400 chargers added across residential streets

The new charge points have been installed into existing street lighting infrastructure across the London Borough of Bexley. The council says the approach is designed to support residents switching to electric vehicles while limiting extra street clutter.

For households without off-street parking, public charging can be one of the biggest barriers to using an EV. Lamp-post charging is intended to make that routine simpler: drivers can connect to a nearby residential column rather than relying only on rapid chargers, car parks or supermarket charging bays.

Bexley Council said the rollout also supports its work to reduce emissions and improve local air quality. The scheme does not create separate charging columns, and the council said it avoids charging cables being run across pavements from homes.

Overnight charging is priced at 44p per kWh

All 400 charge points include Shell Smart Charging software used by ubitricity. The system is designed to charge selectively when tariffs are cheaper, with the biggest savings available during the overnight off-peak period.

Detail What residents need to know
Number of new charge points 400
Charger type Lamp-post EV charge points
Off-peak window 12am to 7am
Off-peak price 44p per kWh
Payment options Pay-As-You-Go by QR code or via the ubitricity website

The charge points are described as silent, which matters for residential streets where many drivers are most likely to plug in overnight. Bexley Council said the 44p per kWh off-peak rate makes the service one of the most affordable public charging options in the borough.

Drivers can search by address

Residents can find their nearest ubitricity charge point by entering their address on the operator’s website. The service then displays a map showing nearby EV charging locations.

Payment is available on a Pay-As-You-Go basis. Drivers can scan the QR code on the charge point or use the ubitricity website to start and pay for a session.

The rollout is especially relevant for residents in terraced streets, flats and homes without private parking, where a conventional home charger may not be possible. By using existing lamp columns, the project also keeps the charging equipment close to where cars are normally parked overnight.

Council says the scheme avoids extra street clutter

Cllr Cameron Smith, Bexley’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure, said the new charge points would make it easier to charge electric vehicles across the borough while offering a smart charging option to save money.

He said the chargers had been installed in existing lamp columns, meaning no extra street clutter and no charging cables crossing pavements.

Stuart Wilson, UK Managing Director of ubitricity, said the company was proud to work with the London Borough of Bexley to expand access to EV charging across the community.

“By installing charge points into existing street light infrastructure, we are making it easy for residents to charge right outside their homes which we hope will further encourage EV adoption across the borough.”
