Barnet foster carers honoured for children’s care: key details

By Munisha local news desk

Nine Barnet foster carers have been recognised for their service to children and young people in the borough, with awards presented at a ceremony attended by carers, council fostering staff and local representatives.

The event, held at Old Ford Manor Golf Club, brought together 30 foster carers and marked five years of service for those receiving awards. Barnet Council said the recognition reflected the daily work of carers who provide safe homes for children who cannot live with their birth families.

Nine carers recognised for steady support

Among those honoured were Devora and Reuben Judah, who have been approved Barnet foster carers since December 2022. The council said they have cared for two babies, supporting one child’s move to adoptive carers and helping create photos and videos for life story work.

Euginia Lolomari was recognised after five years as an approved foster carer. During that time, the young person in her care grew in confidence and has since progressed to university, where she is studying a subject she is passionate about.

Sonia and Terence McNeil, approved since December 2020, were praised for encouraging the child in their care to be ambitious and to feel listened to. Vicky and Vincent Pickering, also approved since December 2020, were recognised for providing a permanent, stable foster home while supporting cultural identity and contact with birth family.

Barnet still needs more local foster homes

Barnet foster carers currently provide homes for more than 300 children, but the borough still has a shortage of carers. The council said it wants more local people to consider fostering so children can remain in safe family settings within their own community where possible.

A Barnet Council spokesperson said carers “provide love and care to children” and thanked those recognised for the “lasting difference” they make.

The council says approved foster carers can receive up to £581 per week, alongside 24/7 support, training, a dedicated social worker and peer support. People interested in fostering in Barnet can contact [email protected].
