Lithuania’s Iki Supermarkets Extend Hours for Summer Season

As the Baltic summer season officially commences, Lithuania’s retail landscape is shifting gears to accommodate the annual migration toward the coast and inland resorts. Starting June 1st, the major supermarket chain Iki has announced a significant extension of operating hours across its most frequented summer locations. This move is designed to serve both the surge in domestic tourism and the increasing number of international visitors, including the significant UK-Lithuanian diaspora returning for the holidays.

The adjustment reflects a broader trend in Northern European retail, where seasonal shifts in population density necessitate a more flexible approach to commerce. In Lithuania, where the summer sun stays high until late evening, shopping habits transform from structured weekday routines to spontaneous, late-night supply runs for beach outings and lakeside gatherings.

New Operating Schedules for Coastal and Resort Locations

From the start of June, several key branches in the most popular holiday destinations will remain open later into the evening. These changes are particularly relevant for travelers arriving late via Palanga International Airport or those taking the ferry to the Curonian Spit.

The following stores will operate under extended summer hours:

  • Šventoji (Šventosios g. 11): Open daily from 08:00 to 22:00.
  • Nida (IKI Express-Nida, Naglių g. 29): Open daily from 08:00 to 22:00.
  • Palanga (Žvejų g. 35): Open daily from 08:00 to 22:00.
  • Palanga (Taikos g. 68A): Open daily from 07:30 to 22:00.
  • Anykščiai (J. Biliūno g. 13): Open daily from 08:00 to 21:00.

Gintarė Kitovė, Head of Communications at Iki, noted that the changes are a direct response to the “seasonal rhythm” of the country. “During the warmer months, people spend significantly more time outdoors, by the sea, or near lakes. We are adapting our hours to ensure that shopping is as convenient as possible for both local residents and vacationers who may be operating on a more relaxed holiday schedule.”

Understanding the Impact on Summer Travel

For those planning a visit to Lithuania’s seaside, these extended hours provide a necessary buffer. The town of Palanga, often referred to as the country’s summer capital, sees its population swell from roughly 15,000 to several hundred thousand during peak weekends. Similarly, Nida, located on the UNESCO-protected Curonian Spit, requires visitors to navigate ferry schedules and ecological entry fees; knowing that a central supermarket like Iki Express remains open until 10:00 PM is vital for those arriving on late-evening crossings.

Anykščiai, while not on the coast, has become a premier destination for eco-tourism and wellness retreats. The extension of hours at the Šilelis branch reflects the town’s growing status as a year-round attraction that peaks during the hiking and cycling season.

A Broader Trend in Baltic Retail

Iki’s decision to extend hours is part of a competitive retail environment in the Baltics. As one of the largest chains in Lithuania—and part of the international REWE Group—Iki has frequently led the market in technological and service innovations, including the introduction of the region’s first fully autonomous stores.

While some smaller convenience stores in the UK have moved toward 24-hour models, Lithuanian retail generally maintains strict closing times. Therefore, an extension until 10:00 PM represents a significant increase in accessibility for the region. Travelers should note that while these hours are set for the summer, retail laws regarding alcohol sales in Lithuania remain strict: alcohol can only be purchased until 8:00 PM from Monday to Saturday, and until 3:00 PM on Sundays, regardless of the store’s closing time.

Planning Your Visit

For those staying in self-catering accommodation or camping in the coastal pine forests, these supermarkets serve as the primary hubs for fresh produce, grilled goods, and local delicacies. The “Iki Express” format, such as the one found in Nida, is specifically tailored for quick, high-frequency shopping, focusing on ready-to-eat meals and essential supplies.

Visitors are encouraged to use the retailer’s digital platforms to verify specific service availability, such as in-store bakeries or click-and-collect options, which may vary by location. As the season progresses into July and August—the hottest months in the region—further adjustments to hours are possible based on foot traffic data and weather patterns.
