Havering checks target under-18 knife and vape sales

By Munisha newsroom

Havering Council’s Trading Standards team has carried out enforcement checks across the borough to prevent retailers selling age-restricted products, including knives and vapes, to people under 18.

The council said the work focused on local shops and other retail settings where young people may try to buy restricted items. The action forms part of Trading Standards’ role in checking that businesses follow age-verification rules and do not supply products that can carry safety or health risks for children.

Knives and vapes targeted in borough checks

The checks covered two categories with clear legal age restrictions: knives and vape products. Retailers are expected to have systems in place to stop underage sales, including staff training, clear checks at the till and a policy for asking for proof of age when needed.

For families, schools and local residents, the enforcement focus is practical: reducing access to products that should not be sold to children. Vapes remain a particular concern because of youth use, while knives are treated as a public-safety issue when sold without proper checks.

A related local case involving a Hornchurch underage vape sale investigation previously showed how Trading Standards operations can lead to further inquiries when a child is sold restricted goods.

Trading Standards action in Havering

Havering Council said its Trading Standards team had been out across the borough as part of the work. The source notice did not state how many premises were visited, whether any sales were made during test purchasing, or whether enforcement action has been taken against specific businesses.

The council also issued a separate service notice saying its website may have intermittent connection issues on Thursday 4 June 2026 between 8.30am and 9am during scheduled updates.

Further details on any investigations, warnings or prosecutions would be expected to come through council updates or formal Trading Standards notices.
