Free SIM cards and data now available at West Northamptonshire libraries

Residents across West Northamptonshire who are struggling to afford mobile data can now access free SIM cards and internet connectivity through their local library. This initiative, delivered in partnership with the Good Things Foundation and the National Databank, aims to tackle digital poverty by providing a vital link to essential online services.

As more public services move to digital-first platforms, the lack of reliable internet access has become a significant barrier for low-income households. By offering pre-loaded SIM cards from major UK networks, West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) is positioning its library network as a frontline resource for digital inclusion. These cards allow users to browse the web, manage healthcare appointments, apply for jobs, and access the council’s own digital library resources, including e-books and e-audiobooks.

How to qualify for free mobile data in West Northamptonshire

The scheme is specifically targeted at adults who are currently unable to maintain a consistent internet connection due to financial constraints. To be eligible for a free SIM card, residents must be aged 18 or over and come from a low-income household.

Specifically, the criteria apply to individuals who meet one or more of the following conditions:
* You have no or very limited access to the internet at home.
* You have no or limited access to the internet when away from your home.
* You are currently unable to afford your existing monthly mobile contract or data top-ups.

One of the most significant aspects of this rollout is the removal of bureaucratic hurdles. Library staff do not require formal evidence of income or benefit status. This “no-evidence” policy is designed to ensure that those in immediate need can receive support without the stress of providing extensive documentation.

Participating library locations across the region

The National Databank initiative is currently active in several key library hubs across the county. Residents can visit any of the following locations to speak with staff about the scheme:

  • Northampton: Northamptonshire Central, Duston, Hunsbury, and Weston Favell.
  • South Northants: Brackley and Towcester.
  • Daventry Area: Daventry and Brixworth.
  • Rural Hubs: Deanshanger.

Staff at these locations have been trained to guide residents through a straightforward sign-up process. Once a resident is registered on the National Databank platform, the SIM card can be activated immediately.

What is included in the National Databank scheme?

The support provided varies depending on the network provider, but all options are designed to act as a temporary stepping stone toward digital independence. The SIM cards are donated by Vodafone, O2 (Virgin Media O2), and Three.

Network Provider Type of Support Offered
Vodafone Often includes data, calls, and texts for up to 12 months.
O2 Typically provides data and minutes for a fixed period.
Three Generally offers a one-off data allowance or short-term support.

These allowances are intended to help residents get back on their feet, providing enough connectivity to search for employment or manage essential household administration without the fear of running out of credit.

Step-by-step: How to claim your free SIM card

To access this support, residents should visit one of the participating libraries during their standard opening hours. There is no need to book a formal appointment, though it is advisable to check local opening times before traveling.

Upon arrival, ask to speak with a member of the library team regarding the National Databank or free SIM card scheme. The staff member will conduct a brief, informal interview to confirm eligibility based on the criteria mentioned above. Once confirmed, they will assist with the registration on the National Databank platform and provide the physical SIM card.

This initiative forms part of a broader push by West Northamptonshire Council to ensure that no resident is left behind as services become increasingly automated. Beyond the SIM cards, libraries continue to offer free Wi-Fi and computer access for those who prefer to use fixed workstations within the building.
