Clun Bridge daytime closures set for essential repairs this May

Clun Bridge is scheduled to close for four days at the end of May to allow for essential structural maintenance and masonry repairs. The historic crossing will be shut to all vehicular traffic between May 26 and May 29, 2026, to facilitate the rebuilding of a section of the bridge’s upstream left parapet.

Daily closure schedule and pedestrian access

To reduce the impact on local commuters and school transport, the bridge will only be closed during off-peak daytime hours. A formal closure will be enforced from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm each day of the project. Outside of these specific hours, the bridge will remain open to all traffic, though motorists are advised to expect minor delays as equipment is moved.

Date (May 2026) Vehicle Closure Times
Tuesday, May 26 09:30 am – 4:00 pm
Wednesday, May 27 09:30 am – 4:00 pm
Thursday, May 28 09:30 am – 4:00 pm
Friday, May 29 09:30 am – 4:00 pm

While cars and larger vehicles will be diverted, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will retain full access to the crossing throughout the maintenance period. Access to frontages and residential properties located near the bridge will also be maintained up to the physical closure points on either side of the river.

Essential repairs to the historic parapet

The maintenance program focuses on critical structural integrity. Engineering teams from Kier, working on behalf of Shropshire Council, will dismantle and reconstruct the upstream left parapet. This process includes resetting displaced copings—the protective top stones of the wall—and performing general pointing work to prevent water ingress and further stone degradation.

WSP will provide technical supervision for the project to ensure the repairs meet the required standards for the historic structure. Although these works are necessary to preserve the bridge’s safety, the council has acknowledged that some disruption is inevitable. Every effort is being made by the contractors to complete the masonry work within the four-day window.

Diversion routes and local notifications

A signed diversion route will be established to guide traffic around the closure. Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and consult the one.network platform for real-time updates on the local road network during the final week of May.

To ensure the community is well-informed, advance notice signs will be positioned at the bridge approaches. Shropshire Council has also initiated a mail-drop, delivering information letters to local properties and businesses directly affected by the temporary traffic restrictions.
