Art on the Move: Kaunas Transforms Intercity Buses into Mobile Galleries

In an era where the pace of life often leaves little room for traditional museum visits, a new initiative in Lithuania is proving that culture does not have to be confined within four walls. The “Gallery on Wheels” project is officially launching in Kaunas, turning the mundane commute into a surreal encounter with contemporary art.

“If people don’t find time to visit a gallery, the art will come to them,” say the organizers behind the project. This philosophy has led to a unique collaboration between the renowned artist Miglė Kosinskaitė and the national transport operator Kautra. Instead of static canvases, ten intercity buses are being transformed into roaming masterpieces, carrying passengers and art across the Baltic landscape.

A Historic Garage Becomes a Canvas

The project’s grand opening is set to take place at the historic Šančiai bus garage in Kaunas. On the evening of May 28, the industrial facade of this normally restricted site will be brought to life through a large-scale visual narrative. For one night only, the garage—a place where journeys typically begin and end in silence—will become a pulsing cultural hub.

This launch event is more than a simple unveiling; it is a multi-sensory experience. The historic building will serve as the backdrop for animations created by the “Emilemilija” studio, accompanied by a bespoke atmospheric soundtrack composed by Deividas Skridaila. By opening this industrial space to the public, the organizers hope to offer a new way to experience the city’s architectural heritage, blending movement, light, and sound.

Why Wild Animals are Riding the Bus

Miglė Kosinskaitė, an artist whose work has been exhibited in venues as diverse as synagogues and traditional taverns, admits that the project felt like a “utopian adventure” at first. For this collaboration, she chose to focus on the theme of living creatures—specifically wild animals.

“We decided that the selected paintings must have vitality, but we moved away from personalized, human-centric works,” Kosinskaitė explains. In her view, the modern, tech-saturated world has left people with a subconscious longing for something raw and real. “Perhaps it is a longing for something alive and true in this world of technology and speed—something playful, distancing us from the noise and chaos of human life.”

Seeing these works on the side of a bus or a garage facade changes the perspective entirely. The shift in scale creates a sense of surrealism, turning a 12-meter vehicle into a moving dreamscape. The artist hopes that the sight of a lion or a wolf cruising down the highway will provide a “dose of positivity” to commuters and drivers alike.

Practical Art for the Modern Traveler

This isn’t just a temporary exhibition; it is a functional integration of art into public infrastructure. Four decorated buses are already in operation, with six more joining the fleet shortly. These vehicles aren’t reserved for special tours—they serve regular intercity routes connecting Kaunas with Vilnius, Klaipėda, the seaside resorts of Nida and Palanga, and the spa town of Druskininkai.

Linas Skardžiukas, General Director of Kautra, believes the project serves a dual purpose. Beyond the aesthetic value, it encourages a shift in transport habits. “If a person, seeing such a bus, smiles, stops, and thinks that maybe it’s worth leaving the car at home—then the project has already succeeded,” he says.

For those wishing to experience the “Gallery on Wheels” firsthand, the system allows for a degree of choice. Passengers booking tickets can see which routes are served by the art-clad buses, allowing them to intentionally choose a more inspired journey across Lithuania.
